The Importance of Reading Together

Why shared reading time matters and how to make it magical for your family.

Reading Together

There's something truly special about reading together. Whether it's a bedtime story, a rainy afternoon activity, or a quiet moment before dinner, shared reading creates bonds that last a lifetime.

Why Reading Together Matters

Research consistently shows that reading aloud to children is one of the most important activities for developing literacy skills. But it's about so much more than just learning to read:

  • Building vocabulary: Children hear words they might not encounter in everyday conversation
  • Developing empathy: Stories help children understand different perspectives
  • Creating connection: Shared experiences strengthen family bonds
  • Sparking imagination: Books open doors to new worlds and ideas
  • Building attention span: Listening to stories helps develop focus

Tips for Making Reading Time Special

1. Create a Reading Ritual

Set aside a specific time for reading—bedtime is classic for a reason! Having a consistent routine helps children anticipate and look forward to story time.

2. Let Them Choose

Give children agency in selecting books. Even if you read the same story ten times in a row, they're getting something valuable from that repetition.

3. Make It Interactive

Ask questions, make predictions, use funny voices. The more engaged children are, the more they'll get from the experience.

4. Create a Cozy Space

Designate a special reading spot—a cozy corner with pillows, a particular chair, or even a blanket fort. The environment matters!

It's Never Too Early (or Too Late)

Start reading to babies from day one. And don't stop when they learn to read independently—keep reading together! Even older children benefit from hearing more complex stories read aloud.

  • Donkey Shoes by Melanie Joseph (of course!)
  • The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson
  • The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak
